3. The perimeter of a rectangle is equal to the sum of the lengths of all its sides, and the area of the rectangle is equal to the product of its base and height.
4. So 2X + 2Y = 172, and X * Y = 624.
5. So Y = 86 – X, and X * (86 – X) = 624.
6.172X – X2 = 624, X2 – 86X + 624 = 0, so X = 8 and X = 78.
7.Y = 86 – 8 = 78 and Y = 86 – 78 = 8.
8. Answer: the large side of the rectangle is 78.
