The perimeter of a rectangle whose opposite dimensions are equal is calculated by the formula:
P = 2a + 2b. Provided that this value for such a figure is 20 cm, and the length is 5 times the width, we find the sides.
Substitute the known values into the formula, and write the equation (the smallest side will be denoted as “x”):
2 * 5x + 2x = 20.
On the left side of the equation, we perform actions with the coefficients of the variable, and transfer the known number to the right, while changing the sign in front of it to the opposite.
12x = 20.
To find the second factor, you need to divide the product by the first.
x = 20: 12 = 1.66.
Therefore, width = 1.66 cm and length = 1.66 * 5 = 8.3 cm.
