| The solution of the problem.
1. Let’s denote the width of the rectangle through x.
2. Determine the length of the rectangle
((20/2) – x) = (10 – x) cm.
3. Let’s compose and solve the equation.
x * (10 – x) = 24;
10x – x ^ 2 = 24;
– x ^ 2 + 10x – 24 = 0;
D = 10 ^ 2 – 4 * (- 1) * (- 24) = 100 – 96 = 4;
x1 = (- 10 + 2) / (2 * (- 1)) = – 8 / (- 2) = 4;
x2 = (- 10 – 2) / (2 * (- 1)) = – 12 / (- 2) = 6.
4. The width of the rectangle is x = 4 cm.
5. How long is the rectangle?
10 – 4 = 6 cm.
Answer: the width of the rectangle is 4 cm, the length of the rectangle is 6 cm.
