The perimeter of the rectangle is 28 cm. One side is 4 cm longer than the other. Find out the length of each side.

Introduce the variable x, denote by it the length of one of the sides of the rectangle.

Then, based on the condition that one side is 4 cm longer than the second, we can write the length of the second side as (x + 4) cm.

Let’s recall the formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle:

P = 2 (a + b), where a and b are the length and width of the rectangle, respectively.

Substitute the entered variables and the perimeter value and solve the resulting equation.

2 (x + x + 4) = 28;

x + x + 4 = 28: 2;

2x + 4 = 14;

2x = 14 – 4;

2x = 10;

x = 5.

So the length of one of the sides is 5 cm, then the length of the second side is 5 + 4 = 9 cm.
