| Introduce the variable x, denote by it the length of one of the sides of the rectangle.
Then, based on the condition that one side is 4 cm longer than the second, we can write the length of the second side as (x + 4) cm.
Let’s recall the formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle:
P = 2 (a + b), where a and b are the length and width of the rectangle, respectively.
Substitute the entered variables and the perimeter value and solve the resulting equation.
2 (x + x + 4) = 28;
x + x + 4 = 28: 2;
2x + 4 = 14;
2x = 14 – 4;
2x = 10;
x = 5.
So the length of one of the sides is 5 cm, then the length of the second side is 5 + 4 = 9 cm.
