The perimeter of the rectangle is 40cm. Find the sides of the rectangle if one side is 7cm larger than the other side of the rectangle.

It is known from the condition that the perimeter of the rectangle is 40 cm. In order to find the sides of the rectangle, if one side is 7 cm larger than the other side of the rectangle, we compose and solve the equation.

Let’s denote by the variable x cm the length of one of the sides, then we will write the other side as (x + 7) cm.

Let’s remember and apply the formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle.

P = 2 (a + b);

2 (x + x + 7) = 40;

x + x + 7 = 40: 2;

2x + 7 = 20;

2x = 20 – 7;

2x = 13;

x = 6.5 cm length of one side, then 6.5 + 7 = 13.5 cm length of the second side.
