The perimeter of one square is 8 cm, and the perimeter of three separate squares is 8 * 3 = 24 (cm). But a rectangle was folded out of three squares, which means there are coinciding sides and there are four of them, like the sides of a square, and their sum is 8, which means 24 – 8 = 16 (cm) perimeter of the rectangle.

Or, using similar reasoning, one could come to the decision that the perimeter of the rectangle is equal to two perimeters of the square: 8 * 2 = 16 (cm).

8: 4 = 2 (cm) width of the rectangle.
2 * 3 = 6 (cm) the length of the rectangle.
(2 + 6) * 2 = 16 (cm) perimeter of the rectangle.
