The point of the number line A is the center of symmetry for a pair of points M and N. Specify the coordinates

The point of the number line A is the center of symmetry for a pair of points M and N. Specify the coordinates of point A if: a) M (8) and N (6); b) M (15) and N (5); c) M (-14) and N (-20)

Because A is the center of symmetry for points M and N, then the coordinates of the point can be found by the formula:

x = (x1 + x2) / 2;

where: x is the coordinate of point A;

х1 – coordinate of point M;

х2 – coordinate of point N;

a) x = (8 + 6) / 2 = 14/2 = 7;

Answer: A (7);

b) x = (15 + 5) / 2 = 20/2 = 10;

Answer: A (10);

c) x = (-14 + (-20)) / 2 = (-14 – 20) / 2 = -34/2 = -17;

Answer: A (-17);
