German troops occupied the territory of Romania in January 1941, then Hitler invited Antonescu to conclude an alliance and fight on the side of Germany. Romania accepted this proposal, attacked the USSR on June 22, 1941, taking the side of Germany. The goal of the army was to return the Romanian lands, which were at that time annexed to the USSR. The plan could not be implemented, because already on June 24, the Soviet border guards were able to repel the attack of the Romanian soldiers. Now the Romanian army began to take up a defensive position.
