Castings change color due to the destruction of the green pegment – chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is involved in photosynthesis, and when there is a shortening of daylight hours, it begins to gradually break down due to lack of light. Instead of chlorophyll, other pigments (yellow, red, orange) begin to predominate in the leaves – a carotenoid. Because of the carotenoid, in the spring we see colorful leaves on the trees.
