The reasons for the creation of professional rifle units are participation in the First World War and the Civil War to suppress anti-Bolshevik uprisings. The military formation numbered 80 thousand people. The formation has existed for 5 years.
Initially, the rifle division was represented by voluntary people’s squads, from which the 8 Riga battalions were formed. Merits of participation in the Civil War: suppression and elimination of riots, participation in the fight against Kaledin, Denikin, Yudenich and Wrangel.
