The role of the somatic system.

The somatic system is part of the peripheral nervous system, which is responsible for the transfer of motor and sensory information to and from the central nervous system. This system is made up of nerves that connect to the skin, sensory organs, and all skeletal muscles. The system is responsible for almost all voluntary muscle movements, as well as for processing sensory information that comes through external stimuli, including hearing, touch and vision. In addition to controlling voluntary muscle movements, the somatic nervous system is also associated with involuntary movements known as reflex arcs. During the reflex arc, the muscles move involuntarily.
