The first monarch belonging to the Capetian began to rule, in 987. He was Hugo Capet. He took the place of Louis V, the last royal representative of the Carolingians, who died childless. Founded by Hugo Capet, the French dynasty ruled for almost 3.5 centuries – until 1328. In the future, representatives of its lateral lines were in power.
