The term double species name, or binary nomenclature, was introduced by the scientist Carl Linnaeus in the early 19th century. The name of a living organism consists of two words. The first word is the name of the genus to which the living organism belongs. The second word is the name of the species. For example, a city sparrow, an odorous lily of the valley.
