The side of one square is 2 cm less than the side of the other square, and the difference in the areas of these squares is 24 cm squared. Find the side of the large square.

Let x be the side of a small square
Then its area = x ^ 2
Side of the larger square x + 2
Then its area = (x + 2) ^ 2 = x ^ 2 + 4x + 4
Area difference 24
That is, (x ^ 2 + 4x + 4) -x ^ 2 = 24
x ^ 2 + 4x + 4-x ^ 2 = 24
4x + 4 = 24
4x = 20
