The sides of the triangle formed by the middle lines of this triangle are equal to 5 dm, 7 dm and 10 dm. Find the sides of the given triangle.
The midlines of the triangle connect the midpoints of the sides of the triangle. Their length is equal to half the length of the third side, to which it is parallel.
Let us denote the triangle formed by the middle lines by ∆KНM, and the larger triangle by ∆ABС.
In this way:
AB = HM · 2;
AB = 7 2 = 14 cm;
BC = KM · 2;
BC = 10 2 = 20 cm;
AC = KН · 2;
AC = 5 2 = 10 cm.
Answer: the sides of the larger triangle are equal to AB = 14 cm; BC = 20 cm; AC = 10 cm.
