The structure and function of the endoplasmic reticulum.

The endoplasmic reticulum functions as a production and “packaging” system. It interacts closely with the Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, mRNA and tRNA.

Structurally, the endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membranes found throughout the cell and associated with the nucleus. The membranes of some cells are different from others, and the function of the cell determines the size and structure of the endoplasmic reticulum. Cells that synthesize and release a lot of proteins need a lot of the endoplasmic reticulum.
