The structure and function of the skin.

The skin is the largest organ in the body. It has three main layers: epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layer. The epidermis is an elastic layer on the outside that is constantly regenerating. The dermis is the inner layer. The subcutaneous layer under the dermis is composed of connective tissue and fat (a good insulator).

Skin functions:

  • Provides a protective barrier against mechanical, thermal and physical damage and hazardous substances.
  • Prevents moisture loss.
  • Reduces the harmful effects of UV radiation.
  • Acts as a sensory organ (detects temperature).
  • Helps regulate temperature.
  • Immune organ for detecting infections, etc.
  • Vitamin D production
