The truck travels on a straight highway at a speed of 50 km / h. He is overtaken by a passenger car moving at a speed of 90 km / h. At the beginning of the overtaking, the car was 20 m behind the truck, and at the end of the overtaking – 10 m in front. How long did the overtaking last?

The relative speed of a car and a truck:

V1.2 = V1 – V2, where V1 is the speed of a passenger car (V1 = 90 km / h), V2 is the speed of the truck (V2 = 50 km / h).

V1.2 = V1 – V2 = 90 – 50 = 40 km / h = 11.11 m / s.

Distance difference when overtaking:

S = S1 + S2, where S1 is the initial distance difference (S1 = 20 m), S2 is the final distance difference (S2 = 10 m).

S = S1 + S2 = 20 + 10 = 30 m.

Duration of overtaking:

t = S / V1.2 = 30 / 11.11 = 2.7 s.

Answer: Overtaking lasted for 2.7 s.
