| The wavelengths of visible electromagnetic radiation are in the range of 400 nm to 780 nm. What is the maximum momentum of a photon of visible radiation?
Photon energy E:
E = hv = hc / λ,
where h is Planck’s constant,
v – frequency,
c is the speed of light,
λ is the wavelength.
The mass m is put into the dependence of the energy E:
E = mc2.
Having a velocity c and a mass m, a photon has a momentum p = mc.
E = mc * c = pc;
Comparing the energy expressed in terms of wavelength and momentum leads to the relationship:
hc / λ = pc;
p = h / λ = 6.62 × 10-34 J * s / 4 × 10-7 m = 1.65 × 10-27 kg * m / s;
Answer: 1.65 * 10-27 kg * m / s.
