Charlemagne is, without a doubt, the most heroic and legendary person in the early Middle Ages. He became famous for numerous campaigns of conquest with the aim of uniting the lands and strengthening a single centralized power. He also created the first Christian state in Western Europe. Under him, a strong interaction between the church and the secular authorities began. Charlemagne subordinated the church to his power, establishing autocratic rule and using the “carrot and stick” method, namely: during the establishment of church dioceses and the appointment of bishops, he demanded that they completely obey him, in return giving them privileges and large tracts of land.
