| 1. Let’s designate the length of this hall by the letter X. Then its width will be equal to (X – 8). Since the perimeter of this rectangular hall is 64 meters, we have the right to write the following equation:
2 x X + 2 x (X – 8) = 64;
2 x X + 2 x X – 16 = 64;
4 x X = 80;
X = 20 (m).
2. Now we can calculate the width of this hall:
20 – 8 = 12 (m).
3. Knowing the length and width, you can easily calculate the area of this rectangular hall by multiplying one by the other:
20 x 12 = 240 (m²).
Answer: The area of this rectangular hall is 240 m².
