World religions – Christianity, Buddhism and Islam – emerged at different times. The oldest of these beliefs is Buddhism, which appeared in the second half of the 1st millennium. It replaced Jainism and appeared in the north-east of India. Buddhism is among the five most numerous religions in the world. Christianity has over 2 billion followers. It originated in the first century AD in the Middle East and gradually became the leading religion in Europe and the New World after its discovery. Islam – the second largest religion in the number of believers was formed in Arabia in the 7th century during the activity of the Prophet Muhammad.
