To a solution containing 16 g of copper sulfate was added 12 g of iron shavings. Calculate the mass of copper released during this process.
The equation of the ongoing reaction: CuSO4 + Fe = FeSO4 + Cu.
1) Find the molar mass of copper sulfate: 64 + 32 + 64 = 160.
2) Molar mass of iron: 56.
3) Find the amount of copper sulfate substance. For this, the mass of sulfate is divided by the molar mass: 16/160 = 0.1 mol.
4) Find the molar mass of iron: 12/56 = 0.2 mol.
Lack of copper sulfate. The calculation is carried out on it.
5) According to the reaction equation, there is one mole of pure copper for one mole of copper sulfate. This means that the amount of copper substance is 0.1 mol.
6) Molar mass of copper: 64.
7) The mass of the released copper is: 0.1 * 64 = 6.4 g – the answer.
