Try to highlight the main stages in the development of Byzantine architecture.

The main form of Byzantine architecture for the construction of temples was a phased modification of the construction of ancient basilicas.

The basilica is a rectangular structure with an odd number of naves. The upper part of the basilicas has a dome with a central-domed system. Byzantine architecture is characterized by the form of connecting the squares of the system in the form of a Greek cross.

Over time, the shape of the dome was modified and acquired a more elevated sphere due to the appearance of a cylindrical vestibule drum. The abaca (slab) disappeared from the capitals of the inner columns, and the dome acquired the shape of a sail.
