Two cars are moving on a straight road in the same direction: the first at a speed of 70 km / h, and behind it the second – at a speed of 50 km / h. What is the speed of the second car relative to the first?
Let’s denote the speed of the first car relative to the ground v1, and the speed of the second – v2. According to the law of addition of speeds:
v2 = vrel + v1
Hence:
vrel = v2-v1 = 50-70 = -20
