Two cars left point A and B towards each other. After 4 hours of driving, there were 140 km between them. Find the speed of each, if the first passes the entire distance in 6 hours, and the second in 5 hours?

Let us denote by the variable x the length of the complete route.

Therefore, we can express the speed of the first car in terms of x / 6, and the speed of the second car, we can express in terms of x / 5.

Knowing that in 4 hours both cars have covered (x – 140) kilometers together, we will compose an equation and determine the speed of each car:

4x / 5 + 4x / 6 = x – 140;

24x + 20x = 30x – 4200;

14x = 4200;

x = 300

300/5 = 60;

300/6 = 50.

Answer: The speed of the first car is 50 km / h, and the speed of the second car is 60 km / h.
