Two identical barrels are filled with water. When 16 buckets of water were taken from them, 9 liters in each, 34 buckets of water remained in the first barrel, and 20 buckets in the second. How many liters of water were taken from each barrel?

Let us denote by the variable x the number of buckets of water taken from the first barrel.

Therefore, the number of buckets of water taken from the second barrel, we can express through (16 – x).

Knowing that after that 34 buckets of water were left in the first barrel, and 20 buckets in the second, we make an equation and determine how many liters of water were taken from each barrel:

34 + x = 20 + (16 – x);

2x = 2;

x = 1;

16 – 1 = 15;

1 * 9 = 9;

15 * 9 = 135.

Answer: 9 liters of water were taken from the first one. 135 liters were taken from the second barrel.
