Two identical pumps pumped water out of the basement: the first worked for 12 minutes, the second for 18

Two identical pumps pumped water out of the basement: the first worked for 12 minutes, the second for 18, and it pumped 4320 liters of water more than the first. How many liters of water did each pump pump out?

Solution.

1. Find out how many minutes the second pump worked more than the first.

18 – 12 = 6 minutes

2. Knowing that the second pump worked 6 minutes more than the first, and pumped out 4320 liters of water during this time, we find out the speed at which the pump pumps out water.

4320/6 = 720 l / min.

3. Find out how much water the first pump pumped out.

12 * 720 = 8640 l.

4. Find out how much water was pumped out by the second pump.

18 * 720 = 12960 l.

Answer: the first pump pumped out 8640 liters, the second pump pumped out 12960 liters.
