Two unlabeled tubes contain solutions of potassium chloride and sulfate salts (KCL; K2SO4). Using silver nitrate (AgNO3) and barium chloride (BaCl2), determine which test tube contains each of the proposed substances. Write the reaction equation.
1) Chloride ion is easily determined using silver nitrate.
AgNO3 + KCl = AgCl ↓ + KNO3.
A white curdled precipitate of silver chloride is formed, which is insoluble in water.
The difference between chloride and sulfate is in the solubility of the precipitate.
2AgNO3 + К2SO4 = Ag2SO4 ↓ + 2КNO3.
A white precipitate of silver sulfate is formed, which is slightly soluble in water; it dissolves well in an aqueous solution of ammonia.
2) Qualitative reaction to sulfate ion.
BaCl2 + К2SO4 = BaSO4 ↓ + 2КaCl.
Appearance of a white crystalline acid-insoluble barium sulfate precipitate.
