Using maps, provide examples of geographic features named after famous seafarers.

On the map of the modern world, there are many geographical objects that have received names in honor of sailors. For the most part, these travelers were the discoverers of these places or made a great contribution to the study of the area.

Famous travelers
If you look at the maps of Australia, then in the south, next to the mainland, you can see an island called Tasmania. It was named after Abel Tasman, who discovered it and was also involved in the exploration of the eastern shores of Australia. Tasman came from Holland and made his travels in the seventeenth century.

Another world famous seafarer was named Fernand Magellan, who was Portuguese but flew under the British flag. In the sixteenth century, he made the world’s first trip around the world. That is why the strait in the extreme south of South America was named after him.

A whole part of the world – America – is named after the Italian merchant Amerigo Vespucci, although the famous navigator Christopher Columbus was the first to reach its shores.

Objects named after Russian sailors
Not less geographic objects have been named after Russian researchers. Among them:

Bering Strait.
Laptevih sea.
Ratmanov Island.
Cape Chelyuskin.

The Bering Strait, located between North America and Eurasia (in the extreme east of the latter), was named after Vitus Bering several decades after he sailed there for the first time under the Russian flag. Named so at the suggestion of the Briton James Cook.

The name “The Laptev Sea” came from the surname of cousins-navigators, members of the Great Northern Expedition. They were the first to study the shores of this reservoir.

Ratmanov Island is named after the navigator Ratmanov, a member of the Kruzenshtern expedition, the first Russian trip around the world.

Cape Chelyuskin got its name from the surname of another participant in the Great Northern Expedition, who became the first person to reach this land. It is located far in the north and is the northernmost point at once for Russia, Asia and Eurasia.
