Was there an alternative to the collapse of the USSR?

The perestroika reforms, conceived by Gorbachev, were supposed to renew the state and introduce elements of a market economy. But in 1991 the country split into separate republics. The ideology supporting the integrity of the state collapsed. In general, an alternative to the collapse of the USSR could have been the voluntary disconnection of some republics and the further maintenance of the unity of the state through reformist activities. The country could be saved by preventing the spread of other values.
