Water is poured in communicating identical vessels. Kerosene was poured into the left vessel so that it formed a pillar 1.5 cm high. How much will the water level in the right vessel rise?

Due to the fact that kerosene was added to the left vessel, the water level in the right vessel will rise by an unknown value x. Since the cross-sectional area of the vessels is the same, the water level in the left vessel will decrease relative to the initial level by the same amount x.

Equating the pressure, we get:

ρк g hк = ρв g 2 х,

where ρк is the density of kerosene, ρк = 800 kg / m3; ρw = 1000 kg / m3.

The rise in the water level in the right vessel relative to the initial level:

x = ρк hк / (2 ρв) = 800 × 0.015 / (2 × 1000) = 0.006 m = 6 mm.
