All steps of the feudal ladder were occupied by people of noble blood, who were called feudal lords. They were landowners. Peasants worked on their lands, bringing them income. The peasants paid the feudal lords corvee or quitrent and did not belong to the noble classes. Therefore, they were not included in the feudal ladder.
