What animals may have descended from ancient fish?

The earliest ancestors of fish, most likely, were living creatures that are similar in structure to a lancelet – for example, pikaya. Pikayia possessed a primitive chord, which later turned into a spine. The difference between the pikaya and other animals that existed at that time was that its body consisted of rudimentary vertebrae, notochord, and very clearly expressed tail and head.
