What are some of the nerve processes covered with?

Nerve fibers can be divided into unmyelinated and myelinated. The latter are covered with myelin – a derivative of Schwann cells or oligodendrocytes (depending on the location of nerve fibers), which, in fact, is a multilayer cytoplasmic membrane. Myelin “wraps” the neuron process, so it can be compared with electrical tape, and is interrupted in special areas – Ranvier’s interceptions, in which the entry and exit of ions occurs. Such a sheath can significantly increase the speed of transmission of a nerve impulse.
