What are the characteristics of representatives of the Chordate type?

The Chordate type consists of representatives of known vertebrates (birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians). Chordates have a bilaterally symmetrical body that divides longitudinally into the head, trunk, and tail. The most distinctive morphological features of chordates are the notochord, nerve cord, and visceral clefts and arches.

Chordates are found in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats. The oldest fossils of the Chordates date back to the Cambrian age.
