What are the features of medieval ideas about man?
A feature of medieval ideas about man was that they were based on the canons of religion, and not on scientific knowledge and discoveries, which were denied by the church and were considered not a godly deed. It was believed that God created man “in his own image and likeness”, and the fate of man and he himself is “in the hands of God.” Therefore, it was strictly forbidden to study the internal structure of a person, to open corpses, to have abortions, to commit suicide – all this was considered a terrible sin, since only God could control human life. It was believed that the main thing for a person is work and humility, and knowledge and science were recognized as evil, since a person cannot know the true meaning of life. In earthly life, a person had to lead a modest lifestyle according to the commandments, poverty was revered, since the human body was considered only a shell for the soul, and only it was necessary to take care of it in order to get to heaven and gain eternal life.
