What are the functions of carbohydrates?

1.Energy function. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for humans and animals. When one gram of HC (carbohydrate) is broken down, 17.6 kJ of energy is released.

2. Storage function. Carbohydrates in the form of complex polysaccharides are an additional source of energy stored in the body of plants in the form of starch, in animals and humans in the form of glycogen.

3. Structural function. Complex HC – cellulose forms the basis of plant tissues, forming its skeleton. Chitin is a polysaccharide that is part of the cell wall of insects and fungi.
