The main function of erythrocytes is the delivery of oxygen to tissues and the transport of carbon dioxide from tissues and organs. They also carry nutrients to the cells of the body. On the surface of the membrane of erythrocytes there are substances of a protein nature – agglutinogens, which determine the human blood group. Even in erythrocytes there are substances that, under certain conditions, are involved in blood clotting. And, finally, red blood cells on their surface carry various enzymes involved in various biochemical reactions.
