What are the main and intermediate sides of the horizon?

The main sides of the horizon are north, south, east, west. They are located conventionally in four corners. If you imagine an ordinary mechanical watch, the north will correspond to the “12”, south – “6”, west – “9”, east – “3”. The blue compass arrow points north, and the other sides are positioned accordingly. If these four directions are not enough, then intermediate ones are also used: northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest. There are also 4 of them and they are located in the intervals between the main sides.
