What are the main differences between the populations of Athens and Sparta?

The population of Athens viewed their city as a center for trade, sciences and arts. The wealthy Athenians allocated large sums of money for the construction of useful buildings and the decoration of their city. Crafts played an important role in the life of Athens.
Sparta, in contrast to Athens, raised a warrior from every citizen. Wealth and luxury were condemned. The population had to lead a fairly ascetic lifestyle, subject to certain rules. To maintain combat readiness, the Spartan authorities could declare war on their own slaves (helots).
