The reasons for the defeat of the Athenian Union during the Peloponnesian War were:
1) Athens’ disrespect for other Greek poleis, as the Athenians often exploited the inhabitants of other poleis. This led to the fact that most of Greece took up arms against Athens.
2) Gross blunders of the Athenian leadership;
3) Financial support of the Spartan Union from the Persian Empire.
