What are the reasons for the persecution directed against the Orthodox Church and its ministers?

The church had a lot of power over the people. The Bolsheviks and all parties that claimed power in 1917 were atheistic. The socialist movement itself presupposed the spread of the ideas of atheism. This was due to the fact that the Bolshevik party wanted to be the sole ruler in the country, not to share power with anyone. The consequences of this were the persecution of the priests of the Orthodox Church.
