What are the similarities and differences between the Old Babylonian and New Babylonian kingdoms?
The ancient Babylonian state arose about 2 thousand years BC, when the Amorite tribes came to the lands of northern Mesopotamia. It could exist from 1894 to 1595 BC. The most famous ruler was Hammurabi (1793-1750 BC), who issued the Code of Hammurabi.
The New Babylonian state arose at the end of the 7th century BC. The new Babylonian kingdom reached its greatest prosperity during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 BC). During his reign, Babylon became a majestic city, the center of culture and trade of the entire East. Large and majestic architectural masterpieces were built there, such as the Ishtar gates, the Tower of Babel, the gardens of Babylon, etc.
An important difference between the old Babylonian state and the new one was, of course, the time of its emergence. The first Babylonian state arose 2 thousand years ago and was rather weak, and the culture was not nearly as developed as that of New Babylon.
