A structural feature of red algae, the algal cell is surrounded by a cell wall. In many species, cellulose is the main wall component (similar to the cell walls of other other algae and plants), but other red algae have mannans (mannose polymers) and xylans (xylose polymers). Other polymers associated with cell walls include agar and carrageenan.
