What attracted European merchants to China?

China attracted European merchants primarily as a source of unusual goods, much of what was produced in China was not in Europe: tea, silk, porcelain. Unfortunately for the Europeans, the Chinese Emperors in every possible way restricted trade, forbidding the sale of many goods, minerals to foreigners and imposing high duties on merchants.
