The Roman emperor Constantine the Great became famous for making Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. This happened thanks to the adoption of the Edict of Milan in 313. For his activity in spreading Christianity, Constantine the Great was numbered by the Church as one of the Equal-to-the-Apostles. An equally famous act of this emperor is the transfer of the capital from Rome to the ancient Greek city of Byzantium, called Constantinople. Nowadays it is the city of Istanbul.
