What caused the Crusades? What did the church, feudal lords, merchants, and peasants count on?

The official reason for the Crusades was the oppression of Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land.

Church: the conquest of the Holy Land from the Saracens, the transfer of shrines under the control of the church.

Feudal lords: the conquest of new lands, glory, wealth.

Merchants: opening new markets for trade, consolidation on trade routes from east to west.

Peasants: They were the poorest part of the Crusader troops. The peasants went east in search of a better life.

Finally, for the participants in the campaigns, the church promised atonement for sins.
