What caused the turn from US domestic policy to McCarthyism?
McCarthyism is a social movement that took place in the mid-20th century in the United States (1950-1957). Even during the Second World War, everyone saw how dangerous any radical movements and political moods can be. When the Maoist regime was established in China on February 9, 1950, the impression on Americans was even more depressing. Communism began to be spoken of in earnest about the “scourge of the Americans”. Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy became the main face of the movement against communism. Harry Truman is a Democratic president and his liberal government did not approve of McCarthy’s actions. Nonetheless, McCarthyism has penetrated all areas of Americans. A system of persecution of dissidents sympathizing with the communists was even created. Despite the numerous vetoes that President Truman has imposed on laws promoted by the McCarthy party, some of them still came into being. For example, a Directorate was created, whose members were supposed to conduct investigations with the aim of detecting communist organizations. Censorship was imposed on radio and television, the so-called “Red Channels” appeared. Despite the president’s veto, the law “on limiting migration” was passed.
