What causes tsunamis?

The most destructive natural disaster on our planet is the tsunami. Tsunamis usually occur off the coast of those countries that are located near the boundaries of tectonic plates. These are Japan, Indonesia, Sumatra. In most cases, tsunamis occur as a result of earthquakes, after which the earth’s crust moves and the mass of ocean water forms a wave. Such waves, reaching the coast, become very high and flood the land. In addition, tsunamis can appear after a very large amount of ice has collapsed from an iceberg or after a meteorite falls.
